Why 404s and redirect chains matter more than you think
When an external site links to one of your pages, that link carries PageRank — the authority signal Google uses to rank pages. If the page returns a 404, that link's equity is wasted. As Semrush puts it: when external sites link to your 404 pages, "the authority and 'link juice' that link was supposed to pass is lost."
Redirect chains compound the problem differently. When A redirects to B redirects to C, Googlebot has to follow each hop. That wastes crawl budget — time Googlebot spends following chains is time it isn't spending discovering new content. John Mueller has noted that redirect chains create "crawlability and mobile performance concerns," and industry data backs this out: fixing a six-hop chain down to a single 301 increased crawl frequency by 14% in two weeks. As a practical rule: one hop is ideal, two is acceptable, three or more needs attention.
These aren't edge cases. They're the default state of any site that's been live for more than a couple of years and hasn't been actively maintained.

Edge proxy: catch 404s the moment they happen
When your domain runs through RedirectIQ's edge proxy, every request passes through our network before reaching your origin. Any request that returns a 404 is captured immediately — path, timestamp, and the type of traffic that triggered it.
That last part matters. Not every 404 is worth fixing immediately. A page getting hammered by security scanners is noise. A page receiving organic search bot traffic every week is a redirect you should have created last month. We classify every request:
- Search — Googlebot, Bingbot, and other search crawlers
- Human — real visitors navigating to the broken URL
- LLM — AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and others)
- Scanner — automated tools, security probes, and SEO crawlers
Suggestions that are scanner-only without any human or search signal are automatically deprioritized. You see the problems that are actually costing you traffic and rankings — not a raw log of every 404 that ever hit your server.

Connect your GSC account and we pull your historical broken page data, enriching your suggestions with search impressions. If you're already running Ahrefs, Semrush, or Screaming Frog, you don't need to change your workflow. Export your broken link or crawl error report and upload the CSV. From suggestion to fixed: bulk redirects, static rules, and dynamic patterns
Once the Suggestions API surfaces what's broken, fixing it should be fast. RedirectIQ is built so that going from a list of 200 broken URLs to fully resolved takes minutes, not an afternoon.
Bulk import
Select suggestions in bulk and create redirect rules in one step. Or if you're handling a migration, export your broken URLs from GSC or Screaming Frog, map each one to its destination in a spreadsheet, and upload the CSV. Up to 500 rules in a single import, each validated individually so formatting issues on a few rows don't block the rest.
Static rules
Exact path matches. The simplest case: /old-page → /new-page. Created from suggestions with one click, or imported in bulk. Stored at the edge and served with sub-millisecond latency from Cloudflare's global network.
Dynamic rules with named parameters
When a URL structure changes, you often don't have one broken URL — you have hundreds that all follow the same pattern. Named parameter rules let you write one rule instead of hundreds:
Source: /blog/[slug]
Destination: /articles/[slug]
That single rule handles every URL matching the pattern. The parameter [slug] captures whatever appears at that position and carries it to the destination unchanged. Multiple parameters work in the same rule:
Source: /shop/[category]/[id]
Destination: /products/[id]/in/[category]
Catch-all spread patterns handle multi-segment paths:
Source: /old-section/[...rest]
Destination: /new-section/[...rest]
No regex. No expression language. Just name the part you want to capture and use it in the destination. A migration that would have required 300 individual rules often collapses to three or four patterns.

What we're building: security at the edge
Fixing broken pages is one half of the picture. The other half is what you do about traffic that shouldn't be reaching your origin at all.
Right now, the Suggestions API surfaces 404s and broken proxy paths — and the action is always "create a redirect." But not every bad traffic pattern needs a redirect. Some of it needs to be blocked.
An IP hammering /wp-admin at 50,000 requests per minute isn't looking for a page to redirect to. A user agent spoofing a browser while running structured scraping isn't a visitor you want to serve. A path pattern that only attracts scanners and security probes doesn't need a redirect destination — it needs a 403.
We're building edge-level traffic blocking directly into the platform:
- Block by IP — single IP or CIDR range. Blocked requests return 403 before they ever touch your origin.
- Block by user agent — substring match against the User-Agent header. Useful for known scraper patterns and scanner tools.
- Block by path — exact match or wildcard.
/wp-admin*,/xmlrpc.php, or any path pattern you want to stop at the edge.
And critically — this will flow directly from the same suggestions interface you already use for redirects. When the Traffic Intelligence view surfaces an IP that's sent 12,000 requests in 24 hours with zero human or search signal, you'll have two options right there:

Same data source. Same one-click action. The platform tells you what's happening; you decide what to do about it.
This matters architecturally too. Because RedirectIQ operates at the edge — before your origin server ever sees the request — a block rule is absolute. The traffic never reaches your server. Your origin stays clean, your hosting costs stay predictable, and your analytics reflect real traffic, not scanner noise.

The longer arc: automatic redirects and automatic blocking
The manual workflow — review suggestions, decide, apply — is the right default. You stay in control.
But we're building toward a mode where RedirectIQ can act automatically, for users who want to enable it.
For redirects: when we detect a broken page with high confidence about the correct destination — based on path similarity, content signals, and recency — we'll write the rule automatically. High-confidence rules get created immediately. Lower-confidence rules come to you for review. You'll have a full audit trail showing why each automatic decision was made, and the ability to override or disable any of it.
For blocking: when a traffic pattern clearly matches scanner or abuse behavior — consistent with known tools, no human signal, high volume against probing paths — automatic blocking will be an option. IP blocks, user agent blocks, or path blocks created and deployed to the edge without manual intervention.
Both will be opt-in. You turn them on when you trust the signal and want the automation. As the detection improves and the confidence scoring gets tighter, enabling automatic mode will become a lower-stakes decision — the platform will have earned it.
The goal isn't to automate everything. It's to reduce the gap between "we detected a problem" and "it's resolved" from days to seconds, for the cases where the answer is obvious.

The Suggestions API is live. The edge proxy, GSC integration, tool imports, bulk CSV, and named parameter rules are all shipped. Traffic type classification runs on every request.
IP and user agent blocking are in active development. The Traffic Intelligence aggregation that will power block suggestions is part of the same build.
